Celebrating the life of
Allan Henry Lander
April 28, 1936 - August 19, 2013
Allan Henry Lander
SAVANNAH - Allan Henry Lander died on the 19th August, 2013 in Savannah, Georgia at the age of 77. Born on the 28th April, 1936 in the reef-side, tourist-luring, sugar-cane city of Cairns at the tropical top of Australia he was, on his maternal side, a fourth generation actor, painter, poet and designer. He was a 1962 graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art faculty at the University of New South Wales in Sydney where in 2008 he was invited by the history professor there, Dr. Margaret Leask, to record his oral history for the university archives which he was pleased to do on a return visit to that city for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the N.I.D.A. foundation in 2009.
Some of the highlights in that history include his term under contract to the National Theatre of Great Britain when that 3-theatre complex in 1976 was declared open by Lord Olivier in the presence of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. At the Adelaide Festival of Arts ten years earlier in 1966 under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth the current queen's mother he played the co-lead, the Incan Sun God Atahualpa, in Peter Shaffer's play "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" an astonishing role, showy as all get out and an excellent springboard for a young actor's burgeoning career. He repeated the performance the following year at the Perth Festival and again in 1969 in Brisbane for the inaugural production of the Queensland Theatre Company. He was the romantic lead, Colonel Fairfax, in the Gilbert and Sullivan opera "Yeomen of the Guard" on A.B.C. Television. He played four diverse roles in Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt" at the Sydney Opera House, and for a year and a half he was Mal in what is still considered the most successful comedy/drama in the history of his native country: David Williamson's phenomenal play "Don's Party". He appears on the cover of the published playscript. Apart from the Shakespearean plays in which he was most comfortable his many stage roles on three continents included the works of playwrights O'Neil, Albee, Tennessee Williams, Wilde, Guare, Coward and Stoppard to name but a few , and in Mart Crowley's "The Boys in the Band" he was the one-L "Alan" – the ostensible heterosexual - still hiding after all those years.
Allan enjoyed long runs in too-many-to-mention Television series in Australia and Britain including for the B.B.C. a two-part St. Joan and a six-part series called "The Deep Concern". He made multiple T.V. commercials for cigarette brands, coffee products, travel companies and even one in the German language learned by rote: a dog food ad for "Friskas Fleischvorst" shot in marvelous Munich. It was in 1978 at age 42 while vacationing for a month in New York City on his return to Australia from Britain that he met the man who was to be his life's partner for the next 22 years: the teacher, artist, craftsman and art historian: Paul Andrew Ratajczak. To be with him and to stay in New York Allan made a change in careers and began to work for the next 20 years for the luminary American architectural designer Mark Hampton. Under his aegis he contributed to such projects as The White House and Blair House in Washington during the tenures of the Presidents Reagan and the first George Bush and consequently on governor's mansions, mayoral residences, embassies and the homes of the richest and most illustrious in the U.S. and Europe.
Allan retired to Savannah with Paul in 1998, aged 62, and began again to work on stages performing in six Shakespeare Festivals in Forsyth Park, most notably as Malvolio in "Twelfth Night", Jacques in "As You Like It" and Brabantio in "Othello" as well as many black box and Lucas Theatre productions with James and Jody Chapin Holt, and at "The Landings" in the Plantation Room he was an Irish fisherman cum poet in a gem of a two-hander called "Sea Marks". He played in some S.C.A.D. short films, the products of graduating hopeful Film directors, most effectively in the eponymous role in "Dear O dear Mr. Riley" an older gentleman with an advanced alzheimer's condition.
Allan was blessed with many loving friends in Australia, Savannah and New York but also would have liked to be remembered by some of the check-out guys and gals at Publix and Habersham Beverage, some of the servers at the Toucan Café and Wangs II, the tellers at the drive-thru Savannah Bank on East 63rd Street and one or two of the nurses at Candler.
A memorial service will be officiated by the Rev. Holland Morgan, with music organized by Dr. Duke Miles, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, the 31st August, 2013 at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in Savannah. After the service his ashes will be flown to Australia for interment in his mother's grave.

I still look for Allan as I drive past his 46th Street home. He was always a joy to be around. He not only entertained people, but loved people. Allan's education, professional life, and travels made one listen to his stories which he told with such drama without a blick of an eye. I'm sad to know that I won't see Allan on an aisle at Publix, or coming & going from his Savannah home. The friendship Allan extended to Mehmet, Nevin, and myself is a treasure. Fondly, Kimberly

I have often thought of the kindness and special friendship Allan had with my mother. I enjoyed the pleasure of getting to know him when I would visit her after leaving my Savannah home. They were great friends, he and Lucie, and I regret that I did not stay in touch after her passing several years ago. Now living in Rome I thought to look up his whereabouts and am saddened to find I have missed my opportunity for a reconnection. I know that he is now celebrating and having a grand time with my mother and all of those who have gone before them. His spirit lives on and he will not soon be forgotten.
- Stephanie Miles, Rome, Italy,
How lucky we are that a man named Allan Lander happened upon our shores. Such a lucky handful are we to have spent moments with him on stage and screen. Luckier still to have shared a glass, a book, a poem, a laugh, a rip-roaring conversation--to have caught the twinkle in his eye! Allan, dear man, how you have graced our lives.
- Eric Nauert, Savannah, GA
Everyone knows how much Allan Henry Lander loved words and to recite. We will miss his warm golden voice, his laugh and his big broad smile. This is an excerpt from Bruce Dawe's 'The cornflake' which he knew off by heart: When Greek women drop a piece of bread from the table On picking it up they kiss it. But what shall we do with the petty corn flake? It shares the tragedy of all small nameless unsacramentalized things Absurd as dandruff or scabs Who shall plead for it? Its future Is written in its sweet anonymous present. It is mush in the act of becoming. It cries for its milk like its Mamma. It has no-one to love it outside the commercial. It is so frail and insincere, drifting into gullets As the autumn leaves in a large city Make irresistibly for gratings - who cares what brief Balletic sprightliness it displayed rattling from waxed packets?

It was a privilege to know Allan. My first memories of him were of the time that we attended the same Primary and High Schools in Townsville together. I have followed his amazing career through the years since and I was fortunate to spend a lovely time with Allan and Paul in New York and at the Lake House some years ago. I have always enyoyed Allan's wonderful Christmas cards and will miss them greatly. My sympathies go to Allan's family and many friends.
